A Christmas Concert

Featuring Lonnie Lee | Tuesday 4 December

Lonnie Lee is Rockabilly’s finest, offering a show unlike any other. It’s Lee’s natural knack of transforming relatively staid songs into something spectacularly sexy, with throats-a-rumblin’ and sharp shoulders twitchin’ to the rhythm that will see your body bop and boogie. It’s a gloriously comprehensive set, nodding to both the obvious staples and plenty of more obscure tracks, and comes packaged in Lee’s latest tour: Solid Gold.

Considered to be the ‘Last Man Standing’ of his era, sit back and cruise along with Lonnie Lee & The Leemen.

NAIDOC Week

2018 National NAIDOC Theme: Because of her, we can!

NAIDOC Week 2018 will celebrate the invaluable contributions that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have made – and continue to make - to our communities, our families, our rich history and to our nation.

Under the theme -Because of her, we can! - NAIDOC Week 2018 will be held nationally from Sunday 8 July and continue through to Sunday 15 July.

As pillars of our society, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have played – and continue to play - active and significant roles at the community, local, state and national levels.

As leaders, trailblazers, politicians, activists and social change advocates, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women fought and continue to fight, for justice, equal rights, our rights to country, for law and justice, access to education, employment and to maintain and celebrate our culture, language, music and art.

They continue to influence as doctors, lawyers, teachers, electricians, chefs, nurses, architects, rangers, emergency and defence personnel, writers, volunteers, chief executive officers, actors, singer songwriters, journalists, entrepreneurs, media personalities, board members, accountants, academics, sporting icons and Olympians, the list goes on.

They are our mothers, our elders, our grandmothers, our aunties, our sisters and our daughters.

The Tipsy Scholars

The Tipsy Scholars hit the Australian music scene in 2014 and have since made a firm impression on their twin home towns of Sydney and Canberra.

With a rich and diverse array of indie folk songs, their exuberance and blended musical tones tell stories of travel and life in a way that only four guys, varying quantities of facial hair and an array of instruments can do. Ticking all the boxes of required band stereotypes from mysterious drummer to the long haired heart throb, The Tipsy Scholars offer the full package: beats, banter and bass.

Papaya Tree

Since Papaya Tree's conception almost two years ago, the band has left no venue untouched on their journey. Relentlessly playing gigs, writing songs and recording in preparation for their debut single Bamboo Schooner, set to be released in November 2017.

The boys in Papaya Tree are young, fresh and eager to please (if you'd let them).
Described as being sweeter than their namesake fruit, the six-piece came together through a number of unlikely situations, from a butcher shop to the school yard and university walls, eventually forming the full lineup from nearly every postcode in Sydney.

Due to the bands size, Papaya Tree have had the opportunity to create an eclectic mix of styles, taking elements from rock, funk, jazz and reggae to create their sound. Lacking in shame, spatial awareness and the ability to park cars, the band mates have formed a brand of music that can place a smile on the face of any listener with a performance that must be caught live.

MANLY FUN RUN & WALK

Starting+line.jpeg

The Manly Rotary Club is again opening the streets of Manly for the 9th annual Manly Scenic Fun Run on Sunday June 3. Over the past nine years the event has raised  more than $1.5 million.

The whole community is being urged to take part in the event and raise funds for local charities. All of the money collected goes to local charities and Rotary humanitarian projects.

The event kicks off at 8am, starting and finishing on the beach-front opposite The Corso.

Some of the past initiatives the money raised has gone towards have included:

  • ·Establishing the Manly Women’s Shelter.
  • ·Building work – a new kitchen, dining and meeting/work area facilities for Pioneer Clubhouse and a new kitchen for the Salvation Army.
  • Refurbishing projects - the bathrooms at Stewart House, the main office area at the Manly Community Centre, the kitchen and dining areas at Mission Australia’s homeless men’s shelter.
  • Purchasing - much needed extra equipment for Sailability, the disabled children’s learn-to-sail school and medical equipment for Manly Hospital.

This year the Fun Run proceeds will be used to support a number of specific youth-related programs and projects. They include refurbishing a scout hall, supporting a camp for ‘at risk’ teenagers and supporting disabled youngsters in a new business enterprise. In addition, it may also go towards sponsoring a number of youth leadership development programs.

All ages and levels of fitness are welcome whether you run the 10km or walk the 2km or 5km.
